Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Salman has issued a directive to name a road in Riyadh after the late Prince Badr bin Abdulmohsen. The royal order is in line with the recommendation of Crown Prince and Prime Minister Mohammed bin Salman, the Saudi Press Agency reported on Sunday.

This road is located west of Princess Nourah bint Abdulrahman University, bordered by King Salman Road to the north and Al-Thumama Road to the south. The King’s issuance of the directive is in honor of the late prince’s outstanding contributions to the nation and in appreciation of his unique poetic experience, which revitalized Nabati poetry and left a profound impact on Saudi and Arab literature.

Prince Badr bin Abdulmohsin, an icon of Arab poetry, died on 4 May 2024 at the age of 75. The renowned Arab poet’s death was mourned by leaders, writers, poets and celebrities across Saudi Arabia and the Arab world.

Born in Riyadh on April 2, 1949, Prince Badr made outstanding contributions for a period spanning over half a century to enhancing national sentiment with his poems, which were sung by prominent Saudi singers. His words crafted memorable national operettas. The prince’s creativity and enriching influence were spread throughout the Arab world with the sweetness of his words, the beauty of his verses, and his unique style, making him an enduring Saudi Arabian icon.

Prince Badr was known for encouraging Saudi intellectuals and artists and chaired the first board of the Saudi Arabian Society for Culture and Arts in 1973. The royal order is an extension of the wise leadership’s appreciation for the legacy of the late prince. In 2019, King Salman honored him with the King Abdulaziz Sash. Additionally, the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) honored him the same year, coinciding with World Poetry Day .
